Special Evening: The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Water, water everwhere, nor any drop to drink …
Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s haunting tale is widely recognized as one of the greatest narrative poems of the English language. It is often considered to have been a signal shift to modern poetry and was a defining achievement in the establishment of the Romantic Movement. Engagingly written, this highly imaginative poem has influenced successive generations of poets, inspired film, music, visual art and drama and has had several notable readings by artists including Orson Wells and Richard Burton. Most importantly, the story, told with great passion and containing many beautiful images, is very enjoyable to read aloud.
This evening, with the aid of a variety of media, we will read The Rime, witness its influence on artists and examine its impact on the English language to the present day.
Participants should have a B2 level (or higher) in English.
