Black Music as Resistance – From Jazz to Hip-Hop to Afrobeats
Listening, Readings & Discussions

Black music has long been more than entertainment — it has been a form of resistance, survival, storytelling, and political expression. From jazz and soul to hip-hop and Afrobeats, Black artists across generations have used music to respond to racism, inequality, displacement, and social change while also creating joy, identity, and community.
This discussion-based course on two evenings explores how music has shaped Black political and cultural movements across different eras and continents. Through selected songs, video clips, readings, and group discussion, participants will examine how Black music carries memory, protest, spirituality, creativity, and visions of freedom.
Artists discussed may include Nina Simone, Gil Scott-Heron, Public Enemy, Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, and contemporary Afrobeats artists. The course combines listening sessions, short readings, video clips, and guided discussion.

Nachdem sie über 30 Jahre lang als Schauspielerin, Sängerin und Tänzerin in mehr als 25 Musicals, Theaterstücken und Veranstaltungen durch Deutschland getourt war, erwarb sie ihr Lehrdiplom und gibt heute Business English-Unterricht in verschiedenen Unternehmen. Seit 16 Jahren unterrichtet Elaine an verschiedenen VHS, Universitäten und Schulen in Hamburg, Hannover und Göttingen. Seit 2015 auch zu Kolonialgeschichte und Black Studies. Elaine ist Global Black Caucus Poet Laureate und organisiert Veranstaltungen, insbesondere zum Black History Month.
