Creative Writing: Poems of Protest, Resistance and Empowerment

Ein Kurs von Elaine Thomas
In cooperation with Afrotopia Black Academy
Creative Writing is all about expressing thoughts, feelings and emotions and not just conveying information. The ability to tell "our own stories" allows us to better understand the processes of our cultural development in its historical context. It can also be used as a survival tool for people who want to better deal with the experiences, transformations and events in their lives.
Concise and powerful, poetry is a popular art form at protests and rallies. From the civil rights and women's liberation movements to Black Lives Matter, poetry is commanding enough to rally crowds in a city square.

Using stories and poetry this workshop is an instructional practice designed to help People of African Descent become confident and capable writers. During the workshop, you will have time to work independently and with the group. We will engage in the writing process by selecting topics, drafting, revising, editing, and listening to your original work. In addition, we will read and watch short videos of black poets for discussion and inspiration. Planned is a small poetry book of Black Academy Poet Writers at the end of the course.
