English Film Club: Classic Hollywood Cinema

This course immerses you in the captivating world of classic Hollywood films from the 1930s to the 1970s. You will analyze content and explore intended and symbolic meanings, examining social issues and gender roles as they were presented then compared to today’s perspectives. Selected excerpts from the films will be viewed and discussed in class.

You will also consider the use of color (including black and white), picture composition, and the role of sound and music. The course highlights the influence of film on other visual arts, such as painting and graphics, and vice versa.

Films by renowned directors like Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, John Ford, and Ida Lupino will be featured, alongside select TV series and cartoons from the 1950s and 1960s. Genres covered include drama, horror, comedy, crime, and westerns.

Through this comprehensive analysis, you will develop a deeper understanding of the cultural and artistic significance of these cinematic classics.
