BOOK-TITLE: THE BERRY PICKERS by Amanda Peters. Set in the early 1960s this the story of an indigenous family from Nova Scotia who travel to Maine every summer to pick blueberries. We follow this Mi’kmaq family as they navigate life after their four-year-old girl goes missing in the blueberry fields.
Told from alternating perspectives, the novel follows Joe, Ruthie’s older brother and the last person to see her before she went missing, and Norma, a young girl living in Maine with an emotionally distant father and an overbearing mother. The the story is not concerned with maintaining a mystery, and Norma’s true identity is barely concealed!
A fine debut novel with a vivid sense of place and engaging characters.
The author is a Nova Scotian of mixed settler and indigenous ancestry.
