BOOK-TITLE: The Correspondent by Virginia Evans. Sybil Van Antwerp, a cantankerous but exceedingly well-mannered older lady, is the titular correspondent in Evans’ debut novel. The format of the novel is epistolary (Briefroman), i.e. it is entirely told through letters and emails (some laugh-out-loud funny). We get to know Sybil herself, her family, friends and acquaintances solely through her correspondence. Ms van Antwerp is relatable, quirky, brillant, blunt – and very opinionated. Failing vision now forces her to confront unaddressed issues from her past.
Please note: Epistolary format certainly requires more effort from the reader! (Surely true of The Correspondent.)
