In six lessons, this course will attempt to clarify many of the major questions about religion, looking at the history, theory, practices and personalities of the six major religions of the world - Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism. Please note: this course does NOT aim to convert participants or promote any particular religious belief.

Buddhism represents a complete process of human and intellectual development, illustrated by the maxim: self-control, wisdom, and compassion are achieved only through listening, examining and meditation. It is regarded as an all-encompassing self-realization process. Understanding of this process is not limited to monks, but also presented to the active layperson in the teachings of ‘The Seven-Point Mind Training’. This course presents an opportunity to access these teachings. Course work includes reading and discussing the book: The Seven-Point Mind Training by B. Alan Wallace.

In his book, IN THE REALM OF HUNGRY GHOSTS, Dr. Gabor Mate makes the case that addiction is not confined to society’s outcasts – or, for that matter, even to ‘substance abusers’. He addresses the spectrum of addictions including
shopping, work, food, nicotine, the Internet, cosmetic surgery, even exercise.
In this course, participants will challenge the contemporary perspective of ‘War on Drugs’ by exploring the scientific and psychological causes of addiction as well as the impact on addicts and hopefully will arrive at a more holistic, compassionate and constructive understanding of addiction and for those whose lives are affected by it.
This C1 English reading and discussion course is for those interested in understanding this ‘language’ of addiction according to Gabor Mate and expressing their own opinions and thoughts.
Required reading is, IN THE REALM OF HUNGRY GHOSTS.
